Hockey Inspires Volunteers

Hockey Inspires Volunteering

I have been volunteering with Hockey Calgary for about 8 years.  For the last 5 years, I have been the Midget Age Level Governor.  The people that I work with every day are simply amazing. The office staff, the other Governors, the Game and Conduct committee members and the Hockey Calgary Board are simply outstanding people.   In addition to those people, I am very fortunate to work on a daily basis with 5 amazing league chairs that I can also call my friends.  These league chairs give tirelessly of their time during the season by attending games, training sessions, medal ceremonies and hearings.  They work so hard to keep the game going each and every day.  The midget age level team and I have been together for 5 years, and none of us have a child who is still playing.  Now that’s commitment, or maybe we are just crazy! It is these people who keep me coming back year after year.

Every year, I watch many games.  I get to see kids skate and excel at the game of hockey.  I see triumphs ranging from a first goal (yes, even in midget some kids are scoring their first goal) to a first championship.  Watching these kids work so hard is awesome.  One of my favorite things to do is to present medals and to congratulate teams from EMHW and City Championship games. .  It’s these moments that keep me coming back to volunteer year after year.

People often ask me why I volunteer for Hockey Calgary.  My normal and go to comment is: “I do it for the kids”.  But it really is so much more than that.  It’s the people I volunteer with every day and it’s for the love of the game.

I’ll see you at the rink!
