Full equipment is required for participation in all age categories. This consists of:
Players register in one of the following categories based on their age as of December 31 of the current playing season:
Players wishing to register for Recreational Hockey must be between the ages of 11 and 20.
Those players wishing to register for a category younger than their age, please refer to the Hockey Calgary Operations Manual under the OPERATIONS button and click the link to Overage Players. It should be noted the instance of Overage Status is more prevalent in rural leagues as many of the pre-requisites are more appropriately applied to rural players. The number of teams and divisions in the Calgary leagues provide a better opportunity for beginner players or those with limited skill to participate within their proper age category. On average, Hockey Calgary approves one (1) or two (2) overage players every season, generally for health related reasons.
For those players wishing to register for a category older than their age, please refer to the Hockey Calgary Operations Manual under the RESOURCES button and click on the link to Player Acceleration. Player Acceleration from TimBits Flames to Novice is not permitted for any reason.
Players must register with their designated Calgary Hockey Association determined by the residence of the player on September 1 of the current playing year. For mainstream hockey only, if a player resides outside the Association he/she wishes to register with, the player may apply to Hockey Calgary for a Player Release (see “FORMS”). In the event that the parents of the player are living apart, please refer to the Hockey Calgary Operations Manual under the RESOURCES button and click the link to Registration – Community: Residency for clarification on determining the player’s designated Association.
Every Community District in Calgary is designated to a Hockey Calgary Association. If you do not know which Association you belong to, please refer to the Hockey Calgary Association Contact List. The Association List contains the following information:
Mainstream hockey is offered at every age category from Initiation (5 & 6 year olds) through Junior (18 - 20 year olds).
Bantam, Midget and Junior aged players have the option to try out for Bantam AAA, Midget A, Midget AA, Midget AAA and Junior B leagues. For more information please refer to the website of your designated Calgary AA Association.
Players that register for Quadrant hockey are also strongly encouraged to register with their Community Association in the event they are unsuccessful in securing a position within their Quadrant.
Recreational hockey is available for players aged 11 through 20. All divisions are non body-checking and games are scheduled on set days. For more information please visit the Recreational League website at www.rechockeycalgary.com.
Female leagues are offered in the Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget age categories. Players interested in joining these leagues register directly with Girls Hockey Calgary. Junior aged players also register with Girls Hockey Calgary but participate in a league administered by the Southern Alberta Women's Hockey Association.
