Harley Hotchkiss Passes Away at 83
Hockey was a great passion for Harley Hotchkiss. Born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Hotchkiss earned a degree in geology from Michigan State University while playing hockey. He spent his working life in Calgary in the petroleum industry and was part of the group that purchased the Calgary Flames in 1980.
During Hotchkiss’s part ownership of the Flames’ franchise, the Flames were twice recipients of the Campbell Bowl as Western Division champions, and won the Stanley Cup in 1989. Hotchkiss was also instrumental in overseeing the construction of the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Hotchkiss contributed significantly to the creation of the International Hockey Centre of Excellence for Hockey Canada. Besides serving as the NHL Governor for the Calgary Flames, Hotchkiss also sat on the board of the Hockey Hall of Fame and was a long-serving Chairman of the National Hockey League's Board of Governors.
In 1997, Harley Hotchkiss was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1998, he was awarded the Alberta Order of Excellence. He is also a Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category.
Harley Hotchkiss will be deeply missed in Calgary and the Hockey community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.
